Manufacturing today is largely a behind the scenes activity that most city dwellers do not interact with. It takes place in massive nondescript industrial areas away from city centres and people, and things just appear on store shelves, websites, or at your door when you order them. What happens behind the scenes is one of humanity’s most ginormous operations starting from the mining of the metals from the earth’s core all the way to the final product being packed into its neatly designed case with a shipping label that has your address on it.
Nearly all objects that surround us from the screen you’re reading this on to the furniture you’re sitting on had go through a journey of hundreds of processes and thousands of miles to make it to you in a usable, consumable and safe form. More often than not, these processes are done laboriously, painstakingly, manually and in environments where no human beings should have to work.
The slick imagery of armies of robots moving in a harmonious dance to produce stuff couldn’t be further from the truth. Less than 10% of automatable tasks in manufacturing are automated: i.e. the technology to automate them already exists, but they’re still done the old-school way. This is because automation is expensive, complicated, time consuming, and does not serve the 90%: those with seasonal needs, limited means or unskilled teams.
This is about to change forever. With Eva, automating production is like turning the lights on. Robotic automation is now so affordable and simple that it can be everywhere. Basic production lines can be set up in a backyard in hours. Goods can be made closer to where they are needed, or even on their way there: in the back of a truck, on a ship or in a plane. Things no longer need to sit in warehouses for months or travel half the world to reach you. Something gets made only when you need it, not weeks or months or years before in anticipation of an estimated demand.
